Correlation runs from −1 to +1. It measures whether two things tend to move on the same days, not whether they earn the same amount. +1 means they rose and fell perfectly in step. 0 means one told you nothing about the other. −1 means one rose whenever the other fell.

Why it matters. Diversification is not about owning many things; it is about owning things that do not fall at the same time. Five coins with correlations around 0.9 are close to one position held five times over — on the day it drops, all five drop. Two coins at 0.3 genuinely cushion each other.

What this is computed from. Daily closes over the window you chose, converted to daily percentage returns, then the Pearson correlation of every pair: the covariance of the two return series divided by the product of their standard deviations. Only dates where both coins have a close are used, so a coin listed part-way through the window is compared on the days it actually traded.

What it is not. A correlation is a description of the past window, not a forecast. Crypto correlations rise sharply in a sell-off — the diversification you measured in calm weather is usually the first thing to go.
